Van Gogh
(Vincent) (1853 - 1890) peintre néerlandais. L'échec de ses missions de théologien protestant chez les mineurs le tourna vers la peinture (1880). Après une période parisienne néo-impressionniste (1886-1888), il partit pour Arles (Tournesols, l'Arlésienne), où Gauguin vint le rejoindre; leurs relations devinrent dramatiques. Après diverses crises de délire (Portrait de l'artiste à l'oreille coupée), Van Gogh fut interné à Saint-Rémy-de-Provence: Deux Cyprès (1889), Route aux cyprès (1890), etc. expriment son tourment. En 1890, il s'installa à Auvers-sur-Oise chez le docteur Gachet, peignant portraits et paysages (Champ de blé aux corbeaux). Il se tira une balle de revolver dans la poitrine. Ses Lettres à son frère Théo ont été publiées en 1937.
